This is the Moody Reviews in association with Brand X Reviews look at the top 5 most anticipated films of 2018.
1. Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom
The number one pick is Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. This is the follow up to the smash hit Jurassic World that rescued this franchise. With the trailer already released we have already got a feel for this movie.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are back and are returning to Isla Nublar but this time to rescue the dinosaurs including the T-Rex and the sole remaining Raptor Blue from an imminent eruption.
What makes the release of this film so exciting is the lack of information on the storyline. All shots in the trailer are from the first half of the film and this addition to the franchise is promised to be darker and focus on animal cruelty and their rights.
This is a brave and fresh direction to take in a much loved franchise. From the trailer we can already see the set pieces are bigger and more spectacular than ever.
2. Avengers: Infinity War
Next up is the latest addition to the Marvel franchise, Avengers Infinity War. After Thor and Spider-Man which although a commercial success, for me were massive disappointments, I’m hoping Marvel can return back to its best. The official synopsis states that years after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two and Captain America Civil War, the Avengers and Guardians must reunite to defeat Thanos who has arrived to collect all the infinity stones.
I am hoping this film will explore the relationships between the two sides of the Avengers team being reunited and is not another attempted comedy fest. The trailer below looks promising with the only worrying aspect is the shaky CGI for Thanos.
Annihilation is the screen adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel and stars the incredibly talented Natalie Portman.
The plot is when a group of soldiers enter a natural disaster zone and only one returns gravely injured but alive, his wife, a biologist, volunteers for the second expedition so she can find a way to save his life. Compared to the films above this film has a modest budget but will satisfy fans looking for a tense intellectual thriller.
Despite my anticipation for this film I am slightly concerned on reports of reshoots and the news that Paramount is only handling USA and China releases with Netflix used for other territories. This and poor test screening reports has dampened my excitement for this film.
However, if the film can capture the journey of the source material and allows Natalie Portman to deliver her best performance this could well be a surprise smash hit of 2018.
4. Red Sparrow
Next on the list is Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence in the screen adaptation of Jason Matthews novel.
The cast immediately points to this being one of the stand out films of 2018.
The plot of this film is when a Russian secret agent played by Lawrence falls for a CIA agent played by Joel Edgerton she contemplates becoming a double agent.
The brand new trailer for this film looks extremely promising. It shows Jennifer Lawrence showing her acting credentials from a sultry seductive siren, vulnerable woman and kick ass secret agent.
Due to the adult tones of this film I do not expect it to match the commercial success of the first two films in the list, but I would not be surprised to see this film make an appearance in awards season.
5. Gods Particle
Very little is know about this film and it has only recently come to light that it is part of the infamous Cloverfield Universe.
What we know so far of the plot is that it follows a mission on the space station. When an experiment goes wrong causing earth to disappear, then a space shuttle to appear the inhabitants of the space station must decide whether the shuttle carry’s friends of foes.
What will be fascinating about this film is much like Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane there is little information about the film. J.J Abrams has once again shown his mastery in building suspense and excitement for a film that no one knows anything about.
With the first two films having such varied styles I am fascinated to see what is store for this film.
